video software for Linux

I need to know if there is any linux software that works with .avi format . Thanks

.avi is not a format, it's just a file wrapper, it's the streams inside that are of a certain format, and presumably you're most after a divx player. how have you been around on this site and never once heard me mention htt://mplayerhq.hu ? i'm shocked and appalled!
