video problem after recompiling my kernel

Hi everybody, i am a relative noob to this so i appreciate any help...

i just upgraded/recompiled my kernel from the 2.4.22 to 2.6.9 kernel. I am running slackware 9.1, but used the gentoo installation guide to make sure that when i made bzImage that i got all the necessary packages...

anyhow i got everything compiled and done, but when i try to boot into the 2.6.9 kernel, it starts loading stuff fine, but then cuts the left half of the boot post off and when it comes to starting up x windows the screen blinks a few times on a black screen, then brings me back out to the screen where the left side is cut off.. if anybody knows whats going on here i'd be absolutely thrilled to hear any solutions

~Thom

ps. Dell latitude cp p233mmx/128/4.0/dvd/nic/13.3"/2mb nm2160 video card, cs4232 sound, slackware 9.1 trying 2.6.9

Well, you definitley need to upgrade module-init-tools to v3.0 if you haven't already done so!! Look on the slackware website for a .tgz package, install it using pkg-tool. Otherwise things won't work right. Once that's done you're going to have to run the script

/sbin/generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf

in a console to get a new modprobe.

Now this may or may not solve your problem directly, but - one thing at a time, now :)
