Video player improper functioning


Whenever I try to open any video file in any of media player it simply opens and closes very fast. I am totally lost how to play the video files
If anyone has any Idea plz suggest

try launching from an xterm and take note of any errors. Might be missing OSS compatibility, or just defaulting to an unsuppported video driver. Any number of things, which should be properly reported on the CLI if run from a command line. Shift + PgUp if you need to scroll up to see those errors.

what distro are you using ???
what player are you using ???
mplayer,vlc,gmplayer,xine , ??? what
and WHAT video format ???
Have you installed the codecs for that format ????

we need more info we are not mind readers.

I have installed some of players like xine, amarok ,vlc and as I am new to ubuntu and has recently shifted from Windows to Ubuntu I dont know much about video formats but i have installed w32codecs.RythmBox is also there but it does not show nay video but simply plays the audio part of any video file and when I click on Visualisation in RythmBox button it closes automatically.
The condition is like this:
If I try opening any video file in vlc it opens and closes very quickly.
Same is the case with Totem Movie Player
I would appreciate your support.
Please guide me properly without getting annoyed (since first time I am using UBUNTU).
