Video Out
 

Was just curious, if anyone could suggest any video out software?
I'm currently running Mandrake 9.1, with a ATI 8500LE 128Mb vid card (with S-Vid Out), and have ben using Xine to watch movies on the computer.

Something tells me watching them on a 21" TV, will be a lot better than on the 14" monitor

There is a program, atitvout, that may or may not work for you. It was made for ATI cards, so its worth a try.

I have a radeon 9000 and i just connected the video out to my tv and my sound to my tv. It works fine without any software.

What version of Linux are you using?
I'm currently running Mandrake 9.1
And what kind of vid out do you have? Mine's svid

I just thought I would update anyone here who is/was interested in Video Out with an ATI card.
It seems that as of Sept 04/03, ATI has released a new driver which supposably supports VidOut (Here ). However, I have not had the chance yet to test it out. If anyone here has already tried this, could you post your thoughts on it, thnx

um have you tried just connecting the svid to your tv

Hi all,

i was also having problems with the TVout (linux RedHat 9). After a few minutes (may be hours) trying with ati.2 (gatos project) i finally returned to the atitvout utility. My problem (i think) with this program is that when i get the tvout working fine in text mode and i try to return to the GUI (ctrl + alt +f7) the refresh rate of my monitor seems to be wrong and also i can see nothing on TV (i can see a blank square on the screen but nothing more).

Anyway, and since i am only interested on viewing divx movies on the TV, the solution i've found to my particular problem is making an script like this:

mount /mnt/cdrom1
atitvout ct //
atitvout -r detect
mplayer -vo vesa /mnt/cdrom1/*.avi
atitvout l
atitvout detect
umount /mnt/cdrom1

I'm not very experienced in making scripts (i'm non very experienced at all in linux!) but it works fine (only in text mode), any suggestions about the script will be wellcome. I use to enter on the GUI normally and the press ctrl + alt + f2 to get a pure text session (yes, i know you know, but maybe someone not).

I'm planning replace my computer. One of the most important features that my new computer has to have is: to be able to watch movies (downloaded from Internet) in the TV.


I was wondering about getting a Connect3D Radeon 9250 video card.

my question is:
To be able to watch movies in my Tv, the only thing I have to do is to connect the "TV-out" of the video card to the TV (and start the movie with Mplayer) ? or do I require additional software ?


Will it be good enough a Radeon9250 card? or will I need a better one ?

I don't know so much about the ATI cards but I imagine it can't be too much different from the nvidia cards.
In terms of the initial boot up no drivers are necessary because the lower resolutions used at bootup like old Dos or run level 3 prompts (320x240) are supported natively by the hardware so you could see this info if you were using the TV as your only monitor. When you start to use high resolution you usually need a driver because the hardware doesn't know how to handle it, it needs to be told. With nvidia you can get a driver from their website which you setup in the xorg.conf file. I believe as someone else said earlier the ATI people have also produce a linux driver and therefore presumably TV-out will be handled in an similar way. I suggest you check out their driver documentation to start with.

You can also purchase the dongle that converts your analog DB15 (monitor) port to a component interface and plug that into your TV (your TV will need to have component inputs). It will basically make your TV your perminant monitor.
