There are two popular encoders/transcoders - programs that convert from one type of movie file to another. One is the mighty transcode and the other is mencoder from the mplayer package. There are others, but these are the ones most commonly used.

Our moderator acid_kewpie has written a very fine application called acid rip which utilizes mencoder for the encoding part. To use transcode I suggest looking at dvd::rip if you're converting from DVD to highly compressed formats like xvid.

Hi
i'm interested converting dvd to xdiv
so i installed transcode.
a this point i get troubles intalling dvd:rip
troubles about the lot of pre requisites.
the main issue is that i have perl 5.8.5 installed
and most dvd:rip requires perl 5.8.6 and other related products.
now is there a stable version oif dvd:rip requiring perl 5.8.5 so i can proceeed with installation :
or is there a linux distro including dvd:rip (and so pre req) ?
(i have mandrake10.1 9.2 suse 9.3) but i have not dvd:rip.
thanks in advance for the helpful support
Maurizio

bong.mau: I use Ubuntu (currently Dapper Drake though I'm sure Breezy would work as well) and you can simply type at the CLI (or use Synaptic) sudo apt-get install dvdrip and it will download and install dvdrip as well as all dependencies
