Video editing software?

Does anyone have any ideas about good video editing software?

I'm running FC4 2.6.14 and will shortly need to edit a wedding video for some friends, on window i used to use a piece of kit called 'Video edit magic' which is pretty nifty, but as i'm a relative noob on linux i've no idea about comparative software for Linux.

so basically what i'm looking for is something that lets me cut the video stream and insert images or other video streams where i want, also to add audio tracks to it.

Oh and a good gif animator would be useful too

any suggestions would be great

you may want to try avidemux for the video editing, and you can use gimp (among others) to edit a gif.

Thanks, but had a quick look at avidemax but its not quite what i'm looking for (well at first glance, though i know i'll find out more as a play with it a bit), i would like to be able to split the video, add sound and static images, for this a timeline would be a better option, but i'll keep plugging away at it, to see what it does and how to make the most of it.

as for gif animator? well, fairly similar to above, again i would like to import a series of static images to create on moving image, but i cant see how that is done in th gimp other than loads of layers (but then you cant see where you are). something similar to Ulead Gif Animator would be pretty good

thanks for the suggestions, i'll keep playing about with them.

any other suggestions would be great

If you had searched the forums for "video editing" or "NLE" you'd have found several threads (, , , , , ) referring to Cinelerra

Thanks KimVette

I did have a quick look and came across the first couple you list, but the others you have listed look far better and warrant following up, i'll try to install both Kino and cinelerra to see how i get on with them

many thanks

well nephish i hope you are getting on better with Kino than i am, i can't load a single video into it, all i get is 'Invalid file specifed' or 'Failed to load media file' or it just quits!

I've tried mpg, mpeg, avi so far with no joy, if you get any further let me know
