video editing linux software

Hi,
I was working with windows xp and switched over to Linux MEPIS. Earlier I used to download my videos from Handycam Sony TRV608 to computer through Windwos Movie Maker2 and edit them and make a CD for showing to my friends and family members. Now I am not able to get the video from my Handycam on to the computer. I think there must be some software for video editing from Handycam TRV608. Can some one enlighten me on this.
