Video Editing
Hi,
i make a lot of home movies for my family of kids, vacations, christmas, etc, using windows movie maker. It works well for me and is only slightly restrictive for what it does. The problem is that I'm sick of windows and I would much rather dual boot two distros of Linux...one just for video editing, and the other for normal computer stuff and internet browsing. The general computing and browsing distro can be anything but I'm looking for info on what to get for the video editing side. I'd like it to be at least as powerful as windows movie maker, easy to use, and would have to be able to import/capture from firewire and save in DV format for DVD authoring. What would you recommend for a distro (currently thinking basic ubuntu) and what video editing software or suites are outh there that I should be looking into? Feature-packed is good and prefered but it has to be intuitive. Personal experience would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks a bunch! |
Have a look here for a small list of programs available - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...iting_software
As far as a distro, you can honestly use any distro of your choice. I use slackware and fedora, and both distros work great regardless. I do, however, recommend linux mint and/or ubuntu, since you are newer to linux. Cheers, Josh |
Josh, thanks a lot for the quick reply! I have slackware multibooted on my pc along with a couple other distros and like it a lot. I've only really used linux in its "out of the box" state just to get the taste of some different environments so I agree that I'd need a distro that won't be too difficult to install programs on at this point. I'll look through the wikipedia list. :)

it is a bit complex ( not a "point and click" ) program
http://cinelerra.org/index.php or basic operations there is "handbrake" for putting together a dvd with menus "DVD styler" or "DeVeDe" |

I've checked out a bunch from Josh's link above. I've narrowed it down to a few and decided that I'm going to use ubuntu for my editing.
I'll use Kino (pre-loaded in ubuntu) for simple capture, cut, and burn DVD's. For the more complicated movies I make, so far my #1 so far is Cinelerra. I'm going to get a little more info on Kdenlive and OpenShot before I eliminate them though. I decided that I'm okay with learning a more complicated program if it is powerful enough to warrant the learning curve. Thanks! Please post if you have any experience you can share with Cinelerra, Kdenlive or OpenShot. |
