video converter program

does anyone know a good program that would convert different video formats to a different format, ex. avi -> mpeg1

You might want to try tovid it is fairly simple to use tovid -in file.avi -out file will convert a avi to mpeg. It uses a number of other programs to do its job but good luck figuring out the proper command lines to do it with them.
