Video chat over slow connection

Does anyone know of a cross-platform (XP and Ubuntu/Linux) video chat program that could work over a slow internet connection (DSL)? Thanks for any input!

I am using this for a class to chat with teachers in rural Minnesota to discuss issues in ESL (English as a Second Language).

It depends on how "integrated" you are looking. VLC will allow you to stream video at low bitrates. You would have to team it up to work with a webcam or camcorder (camcorder might be easier but is probably considerably more expensive), most of the documents I have read on the subject are for streaming existing video, not a live stream, although (in linux at least) you could easily wrap it a script or even just have something like mplayer capture the feed to a file (whatever.mpg) and then have VLC stream that file...

I think, at least what I would do, would be to look at VLC to see if it has the options you need.

Thank you for your quick response, Chad. Would you be able to post a link to some of that documentation for VLC?

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I just saw this thread in a "My Posts" search. Anyway, VLC documentation can be found at videolan.org and specifically streaming is at:
