video capture & decoding, avi2mpeg

I've looked around a lot and cannot find linux software to capture and code/decode analog video before burning a vcd. I'm looking for utilities that work with a gui if possible.
The video capture function of XawTV does not work on my system, mdk9.1, the dialog box will not accept a filename for recording...

you really don't need a gui... get used to it without and you'll never go back... http://mplayerhq.hu there are frontends available like kmencoder (ick), but you really really don't need them.
