vi won't backspace or delete in terminal

Hi, I can backspace and delete in vi when i'm running it in a ordinary text console but when I open a terminal in the GNOME desktop, the backspace and delete keys just "beep" at me.

I really like vi - can anybody put me on the right track? I've searched the web and this seems like a common problem but one with out any obvious (& simple) solutions.

thanks

JAmes.

does ctl + h backspace for you in vi? If so, you might need to do a "stty erase ^?" at command line before you run vi.
