vi question

When i'm typing in vi, it insists on adding newlines whenever i hit the edge of the screen. Now, this does make it easier to read, but it's also annoying. How can I disable this?

hmmm, well you need to either create or edit your

$HOME/.vimrc

I believe adding

set nowrap

should do it, but maybe not.

Is it actually adding a carriage return at the of the screen or just wrapping the line? If it's just wrapping, set nowrap as BigNate mentioned.

It's actually skipping down to the next line, not just wrapping. Like, when I do a readline from a python script, it reads a newline character at the end of the line where it wrapped. Nowrap is one way to do it, but i'd rather have it wrap without adding the newline. I remember that it used to do that, but with a new install, the default behavior changed.
