It appears to be a bug in vim. Try to enter just "vi" to see if you get the same error. If it happens, then there is a terminal setup problem in the remote machine. May be your terminal has not a corresponding terminfo in its database. If this happens only when you try to open a specific file, you should examine this file with "less" or "more" to get a clue of the circumstance and report the bug.
