VI dosnt behave ....

Hi, I have recently started using VI and VIM as my main text editors, however, I have noticed that the copys installed on my machine behave totally differently to those on a couple of shell providers I host with, I have asked the admins of those shell providers and they say both vi and vim are standard compiles and I have the same version as they do, they suggested that my shell settings may be different ? I'm a tad confused by this, I'd be grateful if someone could help me out !

In what way are they different? Do certain commands work differently?

well, for instance, when I vim a file and then press i to insert text (as I would do on these other systems) the arrow keys which I would normally use to navigate insert letters insted of moving the cursor !

My guess is that you are doing this from a windows telnet connection. I have seen this quite a lot - you just need to set your terminal properties to use vt100 arrows.

lol no, and no I'm not telneting to another server, this is a local binary of VIM executed via xterm, and its letters not numbers
