vga=xxx global setting doesn't work with grub
I have always used lilo in the past and decided to give grub a try. With lilo I just put vga=792 in the global part of the lilo.conf file if I wanted to change the console size. This doesn't work with grub, the only way I can get the council size to change with grub is to put it in each boot parameter like so
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-28.9 ro root=LABEL=/ vga=792 hdc=ide-scsi hda=ide-scsi
Does anyone know why when putting in the global setting of vga=792 in the grub.conf file it doesn't work?

Just include it on the kernel line (for each kernel where you want the framebuffer console active).

I guess it should. My menu.lst file isn't a link, though, and have never used grub.conf
maybe try 0x318 instead of 792? Just a guess.
