??? Very strange things appening to my Debian ???
Hallo all,
Strange thing Nr. 1: The dist. of linux on my old notebook is Debian 2.6.8. During the installation, I remember, all the necessary packages regarding sound have been selected, but it won't play CD until I run ALSACONF as sudoer every time after startup. I don't know why the corresponding configuration cannot be saved. Strange thing Nr. 2: Once I had success in making XMMS play mp3, but such luck has not come to me any more. I have tried with all kinds of combination of settings, still failed to let it performance. NOATUN exhibits similar symptoms, i.e. reluctant to play mp3, but seems to mutely read mp3 files as I activate it as nonroot. There are still a couple of strange things haunting my poor computer. I wish I could first get around these two problems with your kind help. Thanks a lot in advance, win2s |

i have the same problem actually with settings not being saved for reboot. as for playing mp3s, after you run "alsaconf" you should open Options>Preferences in XMMS and set the output plugin to ALSA and click Configure and set Audio device to "default" without the quotes. that should get your mp3s playing. |
Hallo r00tb33r,
Thanks for your suggestion. Just now I tried that setting, but still doesn't work. I start xmms from a terminal. when the play button is clicked, I get indication: ** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (default): Das Gerät oder die Ressource ist belegt (in English) the device or the ressource is possessed. Acctually except that this forum is opened, nothing else but the mute xmms is repeatedly configured. I appreciate further help. win2s |

look for any applications that can be using the card. for me it was usually a flash applet in a browser. so to properly test this, close all those programs and try xmms by itself. once you get your ALSA settings to be saved for each boot (i dont know how), you should set up some sort of mixing, that will enable more than one program to use the card at the same time. |
