Very slow connection

My internet connection is very slow when I use Linux. I normally get download speeds of 60K+ with XP but with Linux (Red Hat 8.0) I get speeds of 3.5K. :(

I was thinking about changing browser but I think it's more than that....please help!

Sorry

Sorry.....I've put this in the wrong place......stupid me! If you want to switch it over to the network section then please do.....

I've just read another post and typed ifonfig, this is what I get:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:04:F6:29:E8
inet addr:80.193.94.26 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:9990 errors:1429 dropped:0 overruns:81 frame:2107
TX packets:4250 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:5160014 (4.9 Mb) TX bytes:492097 (480.5 Kb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xec00

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:92 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:92 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:5976 (5.8 Kb) TX bytes:5976 (5.8 Kb)

There are a lot of recieved packets being dropped, so this may the reason for the slow broswsing and downloading. How can I fix this....

Well actually if you look at the output there are 1429 packet errors but zero packets are actually dropped.

Sorry, my mistake...I meant errors....

Do you mean to say that the errors shouldn't effect my connection?

Mik 11-01-2002 03:22 AM

Well at such a high percentage they would affect your speed. It's constantly having to resend packets if there are errors. Could you tell us a little more about the kind of ethernet card, what kind of connection? Speeds you are using and all the other network components which play along in the game like hubs, routers, switches, etc...

O.B.Quite 11-01-2002 03:33 AM

I'm using a 3COM 3C905CT card. I have a cable modem attached to that. My system is a stanalone (No network).

My speeds are normally 512/128, I get an average of 65K/s download.

But with Linux I only get around 3.5K max :(
