Very slow Amarok, have tried multiple suggestions for speeding it up to no avail

I've recently been experiencing quite a problem with amarok: it runs like molasses! I don't really have a slow computer, although my box is no powerhouse (AMD Athlon 64 X2, 2G RAM, 120G 5400 rpm HDD). At first I would only experience problems when I was either updating my collection (which I expected, due to the fact that accessing my HDD is like going to the DMV) or writing/reading my iPod. I disabled automatic rescans and updates of my collection to get it to be more responsive, but the result has been even worse. I made an effort to use MySQL instead of SQLite, as some have suggested to speed things up, but couldn't find the configuration option in my version to get amarok to use the MySQL DB I created.

Has anyone else had and hopefully conquered this issue?

Which version of Amarok are you using?
