Very newbie - no disk space left, help!

Hi all, thanks for tuning in.
I just installed RHEL WS 4 on my sony vaio laptop, and following an article that I read, I partitioned a small amount of space for the swap and boot partitions, and something just over 4GB for the / partition. I haven't installed any software hardly and the drive is already so full that I can't log in as anything but root.

I am dual-booting and have a partition that I'm sharing with windows, and that's where I could put my overflow, but I don't know what files I can move and which I can't. Nor do I know how to move them. My thought was to delete all of my RPM files. If I delete all of my RPM files, will that cripple me in any way?

Also, I installed RH9 before installing RHEL, and my GRUB bootloader tells me that I can still boot to RH9. Haven't really tried it, but does that mean that RH9 is still on my machine, separate from RHEL. If so, how would I go about removing it and all the files that come with it?

I have figured out how to mount the windows shared partition on boot, and I know basically how to move files around, so please base your answers on that level of knowledge. Thank you thank you thank you for the help!

p.s. once I get that straightened out, does anyone know where I can get some decent drivers for the function keys and jog dial on my Vaio PCG-GR370?

if you're installing software via yum or apt, then rpm's are left as a cache. delete them all, they are purely a container for software distribution, the files play no role in a running system at all.

ok, well, basically I don't know what yum or apt are, but I've been using the up2date software to download and install RPM update packages for the packages on my system. Also, where are RPMs located if I want to delete them? I know I must be incredibly annoying to be asking such simple questions, but I'm trying to get up to speed. Also, if I delete RPMs, will I still be able to uninstall packages later if desired?

ahh yeah up2date would be the 3rd one...

normally they will end up somewhere like /var/cache/up2date or something. try "find /var -iname *.rpm"

3rd one, as in 'after yum and apt?'

so is it OK to delete all those RPMs in /var/spool/up2date?

Also, is there any way for me to mount some of the linux data on my WinShared drive, or is that badbadbad?

thankss for the helpp!

yep, delete them... not sure what you mean by the second bit... if you have a fat32 partition then you're free to store data there under linux, but only as archived data etc... don't try to run linux binaries from it etc...
