Version control software for writing?

I'd like to set up some kind of version control for my fiction writing. I've seen lots of fancy outliners for writers, but nothing that addresses content management and version control.

What I want to do is be able to maintain several versions of each document (SXW files, for the most part) concurrently and be able to check in/out those documents remotely. I find myself writing on several different machines, and thus toting around flash drives and remembering to make new versions of files is getting tedious.

I'm considering CVS and Subversion, but neither were designed with writers in mind, so I'm not sure if either will address my needs.

Does anyone know of software specificallly written for writers that handles version control? If not, can someone tell me if CVS/Subversion will do what I need it to? I've poked around quite a bit on Google and can't find out exactly what will work.

Thanks.

CVS and Subversion will both do what you want. They both support branches and tags and all that good jazz. The good thing is that they don't care in the least what you put in them. It doesn't know if you're committing code, literature, or cooking recipes. It just versions the files you do give it

Thanks, sigsegv.

I suspected as much, but I didn't want to go through the trouble of installing either of them and get it all configured and then realize it doesn't quite work for my needs.

Thanks again.
