Command to find out what version of SuSE I am runnig, please!!

thanks, but it gives me the build, not the SuSe version. I tried the cat command and it works on my server but not on the server I want to check for some reason.

many distros also have a release file, see if /etc/suse-release exists, or somethign similar

maybe u could find out what version of suse distributed with the kernel ?

or grep -iR suse /etc hoping to find a comment about version?

Thanks anyone.. I found out I had to be in the /etc directory to do the command cat SuSE-release..

by the way slackware doesn't have that kind of file..
