i am sorry if i missed it in a rush, gf comming down so will be off out.
but i use winavi on windows or did, sucks really bad, takes a nice clean avi file makes a nice dvd vob files with super jumps in them. horrid.
but anyway is there a decent avi - dvd converter on linux?
just varifing i can play - steam/cs/half life 2, in wine or do i need cedega?
dvd2one - linux alternative? - it takes a huge dvd, and shrinks it down so it fits on 1 dvd disk
dvd decrypter - rips a dvd, removes all region codes etc. is there a linux alternative?

avg have a linux anti virus, does linux really need an anti virus?

theres a nero for linux right? is it any good, if not any good dvd/cd writers?
i can't think of any more right now. when i have free time tonight i'll boot into windows see what i have on there that i would need on linux, if i can't find alternatives i'll post here.

anyways thank you to all who help
and sorry to all who moan, i did search but it wasn't exactly an exhaustive search.

Re: Various software

OK. Here we go. First of all, you may want to check if any of your Windows software are mentioned in "Linux equivalents for Windows software" or in "Win-Lin-Soft". Please make sure you look at those two links - they provide links to many more mulitmedia apps than I have mentioned in this post. If there aren't any for a specific application, then I'll try to add my own as follows:

I think that Kino may be able to do the avi thingy, but I definitely know that it takes any video clips you can shove into it and burns them onto a DVD - don't know if it supports .avis though.

I have managed to get Counter-Strike 1.6 working properly in Wine, but only after _LOADS_ of tweaking and help from forums. I've never attempted to install HL2, but you can try it.

There are more than one DVD rippers for Linux. Check out dvd::rip. Search Google for "linux dvd ripper" - there are many more.

I'm not sure about the dvd2one thing....someone else may be able to answer that! Or, you could try searching for a description of it on Google (including the word "Linux" obviously ;)), because I'm not exactly sure what it is! edit: Ermmm....dvdrtools? :p

Linux doesn't really need an anti-virus, but then again, you must always be paranoid when it comes to security, so I recommend you go for the Bastille security set. Very nice.

You can get the Nero for Linux, but I much prefer to use K3b. There you go! Happy? :D HIH,
