various problems in mdv 2006

I have a few problems with my system:

- starting a couple of days ago, I cannot get to konqueror. the process runs, but there is no window. I tried from a root console, no problem at all. starting konqueror via a console gives no feedback whatsoever as user (lots of stuff for root). trying to open a folder starts a process, and it looks like the program starts on the task bar, but no window opens.

- virtual terminals are black. (ctrl-alt-f[1-6]) shows a black screen with a cursor. when I type, the cursor moves, and if I execute something, everything is normal, except I cannot see the text that is there.

- X server terminates suddenly. more and more frequently, my X server terminates, and then restarts. the system log tells me nothing, usually something like this:
Code:
kdm[2495]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
anyone able to help me with any of this?

my system is Mandriva 2006 x86_64 running on amd64 3700+, 1,5GiB ram, plenty of swap. I also have lots of room left on all system partitions.

First thing I would recommend is run all the updates; the konqueror not opening problem is a well known bug in mdv2006 which was fixed by the updates. See this thread for a fuller discussion of the problem:

http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?s...2&hl=konqueror

The second thing I would recommend is that you uninstall "kat" which was installed by default and caused a lot of problems in mdv2006. kat was suppose to index and keep track of files but it is very buggy.

Finally, the other problems re X server and virtual terminals may be due to the xorg version used in mdv2006; it was from a cvs snapshot and not the then current stable xorg. That caused problems for a lot of people. The updates should help.

all updates are installed. I think konqueror starts, just there is no window created.

it is a shot in the dark, how about deleting the whole
of directory .kde in your /home/username (you might want to do a backup first).
The rational is that on my PC this has gone corrupted once, and
on rebooting X mandy will create a default .kde this way

a couple of other problems forced a system reboot, which solved both the konqueror and vterm problems
