various grub errors

I have been trying to install from a Xubuntu 6.1 CDRW. Everything goes smoothly, through the entire installation. I tried to do my own custom partitions, as follows:

linux-swap 2GB used as swap
ext3 20GB used as /home
ext3 58GB used as /

Grub loading...
Error 15

so then I tried the "erase entire disk" default, and got:

Grub loading...
Error 17

tried another custom with a 10GB /boot added:

ext3 10GB used as /boot
linux-swap 3GB used as swap
ext3 20GB used as/home
ext3 47GB used as /

Grub loading...
Error 21: Disk not found

I've tried googling all of this but I really don't understand how it all works and I'm just puzzled. I've done a couple of Ubuntu installs before with no trouble, always doing "erase entire disk"

only complication I can think of is a PCMCIA 2GB hard drive. I had it in for the first and third custom attempts, but not for the plain "erase entire disk".

From the GRUB manual:

Quote:
15 : File not found
This error is returned if the specified file name cannot be found, but everything else (like the disk/partition info) is OK.
Quote:
17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB.
Quote:
21 : Selected disk does not exist
This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system.
