/var/log files deleted causing no GUI display for administration

As described, after accidentally deleted all files in /var/log, i have problem accessing the GUI administration page. I can still telnet and login but can't get the GUI started. What should i do? Thanks. By the way, its Sun Cobalt server, using Sun Linux. The GUI I mentioned is remote access through network (IE6 display) the same with telnet. Please help. Thanks.

if it fails to show the GUI because it shows a message such as:

"cannot find /var/log/syslog, quitting..."

then just:

touch /var/log/syslog

and for every log file not found... nothing too important in /var/log except logs...

erm, tried your suggestion, but still can't do...there's no error message. it's a sun cobalt server using sun linux. The GUI i mentioned is from a window-based OS, using HTTP to the IP of that server. That GUI cannot be displayed. The error by IE is "The requested URL cannot be retrieved. The following error was encountered:

Connection Failed
The system returned:

(111) Connection refused
The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again."

But the server (an email server) still works alright. Can telnet...but why it says connection failed??? Please help. Thanks.

that might be a firewall issue. Try to see if the server has the appropriate port opened...
