utility to turn off direct rendering in X

for some reason when direct rendering is on, x stalls constantly. So i was wondering if there was some utility that will let you turn direct rendering on and off.

in case it matters, im using red hat 9 with a radeon 7000 video card.

edit /etc/X11/XFree86-4

I don't know about Slackware but through mcc in Mandrake one can turn off DRI.I think that there is also something similiar in Redhat(which I use),I just have to change the module from my card to svga and we've got 2d only.
