Util to convert .wmv to mpeg?

When I view .wmv video files using either Totem or Mplayer, playback is choppy. Is there an app that will convert these files into another format, such as mpeg-2, that might play back more smoothly?

fyi, I'm running Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy" on a Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHZ so there's plenty of horsepower for video viewing. I'm assuming this is a codec issue.

You could do it using mencoder. apt-get install mencoder to get it.

Here's the command:

mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -of mpeg -o output_file.mpg your_file.wmv
