UT2k4 Demo leads to problems for me

Well, i like so many others downloaded the UT2k4 demo for linux. This is the first native game i've tried to run on my system [slack 9.1 Kern 2.4.22 AMD XP 2.4 w/ 512ddr Nvid Gf4 440]
I installed the demo, and when i try to run it it tells me SDL can't find a display available.

Now since this is the first game i have [ever] tried to run in linux, i know not what sort of nightmareish screw ups i have in my X configuration files.

I'm fairly new to linux, so i really don't know where to begin looking for my problems.
any help would be appreciated -- if you need more information on error messages and whatnot - well, i'd be happy to supply, but you'd probably have to tell me what i'd have to execute to find the information.

I had the same problem. I could get it to run it softwear rendering mode.
(which subsiquently died after the intro screen, i have pinned the problem
to be the 3d accelerator) Aparently you can use openGL with linux but i couldn't figure this out either.

Do you have the nvidia driver module installed?
This is kind of necessary for hardware rendering
You can probably find it at www.nvidia.com, and they have a forum too I believe

bye

AS far as i know the nvidia modules are loading properly -
i installed the new nvid drivers, but do i have to recompile the kernel to get the modules into it, or do they load as-needed
As i said i'm quite new to linux - not sure where to ckeck for what
i check cat /proc/drivers/nvidia [or something similar i don't recall the exact path] and it did show the driver version.

other suggestions ? or where i can ckeck to be sure the modules are being loaded
