Using yum instead of source but use same configure options

We normally install all applications such as PHP and Apache from source on our CentOS and RHEL server.

Now we started a discussion whether we should use yum instead to get all the necessary updates when running 'yum update'.

The question though : How can you use specific configure options when installing Apache and PHP for example ?

You cannot. The rpm was configured when it was made and is what you get. However there are repos available with most common configurations. The other alternative is to use the source rpm (.src.) and rebuild each time from that (updated version). This allows you to use whatever options you like, is fast (relatively), and still gives you the advantages of using an rpm (vs. a pure source install).

You can create you own "rpm".

I guess I was not clear. Building your own rpm from the source rpm was what I meant.
