using "quilt" display garbled output for its diff command

hi

I am using this tutorial for learning quilt,
there are more as well

http://suse.de/~agruen/quilt.pdf

I get to this point very well

Code:
quilt refresh
Refreshed patch flower.diff
cat patches/flower.diff
Index: debian/Oberon.txt

but if I then try to use the diff command I get garbled output

Code:
quilt diff

I have so far tried terminal editor nano
gui editors leafpad and mousepad
--without any improvement

I tried also different fonts in each where possible, and I use
terminal roxterm for my default terminal.
for my eye sight I prefer font
dejavu san mono points 12
--but have tried others as well.

any suggestions are most welcome
