Using NT Backup on samba shares

Obviously I can map to my RH8 samba server from NT4 server and backup the data on the samba share to the NT4 server tape device. However when I come to restore the data, I get problems with the permissions restore, I expected this to happen, am i barking up the wrong tree using Ntbackup.exe ??

You should use something like tar or star first, then you can use ntbackup to back up the tarred files. If you use nt's restore, you will restore the files, but you will lose the permissions, ownerships and acls since the restored files will be owned by the person restoring it.
