using mencoder to convert directory to avi

Hi there
I have a DVD saved to a directory on my local HD, and I want to decode it to avi. How do I do it (using mencoder???).
Is there a way to just play the movie when it is not burned on a DVD but from the filesystem?

Use acidrip to rip dvd to avi format..
