Using Gimp to reduce size of image for web

I used Photoshop a couple of times and I remember that there was a facility to reduce the jpeg image size for web and email use. I remember that I could keep the image as it was (ie no cropping etc) but dramatically reduce the kb size.

Is there an easy way to do this is Gimp? I spent hours (missing the obvious?) looking for a way to do this last night and could only achieve partial success by image cropping.

Please help!!
Thanks

It's about trading in quality (detail) for size, "save as jpeg"; lower quality level and raise the smoothing level to compensate a bit.

Another idea might be to save the image as PNG, it would appear that you get better compression, at less of a price (quality).

Cool
