Using FFMPEG with Xvid and lame

How can I make the ffmpeg to use Xvid and lame? I have source code for all three. Currently I have compiled all three separately (and so I have Xvid and Lame libraries). Should I have somehow compiled Xvid and Lame inside ffmpeg? Or are the libraries just in a wrong place (or symbolic links missing)? If that is the case, where should the symbolic links be?
