Dear Linux Friends,

I'm new on working with Linux and enjoying it really. But i have to learn a lot of things by trail and error. There is one thing i cant't right.

I'm scanning slides with Minolta Dualscan III - usb connected using vuescan 7.6 - using Red Hat 9.0. Everytime i start it all checks out OK. But after a few slides scanning stops and the program (vuescan) runs down, i.e. get stuck/hangs.

There are two things that i can't master.

First, the VueScan Release Notes tell:
"if you're using Red Hat 8.0 or later, you may need tot set up the enviroment variable LANG to C ....type:
env LANG=C vuescan"

What does it do what does it mean and should i simply type this line as a user in terminal mode?

Second, they hint to possible problems with the USB- time out. This is maybe my problem. They tell you to increase the kernel usb time out value by "CONFIG_USB_LONG_TIMEOUT=y".
OK i'm a guy from Holland but this is really French too me.

Again: What does it do what does it mean and should i simply type this line as a user in terminal mode?
