Unhappy USB permission problem / Gphoto2

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble trying to access my USB camera (as a regular user). My camera used to work fine in the past, but it doesn't anymore.

I upgraded Gphoto2 to the latest version. After some fiddling around I discovered the nature of the problem; namely USB permissions.

In /proc/bus/usb/xxx/ the permissions for the file that represents my camera are set to root.
I followed all the directions for setting USB permissions on the gphoto2 website, and tried multiple versions of the usbcam script, none worked for me. Now when I set the permissions manually (using chown) all works fine!!

I've read somewhere that there should be a /proc/bus/usb/drivers file present on your system. I don't have such a file, so perhaps this is the cause of the problem.

Does any of you know a way to overcome this problem, and to have hotplug set the permissions automatically when I plug in my camera?

/proc/bus/usb/drivers has three directories named 001 002 003 and file named devices that is empty and a file named drivers that is empty, this is on a stock slackware-10.2 with hotplug enabled, i set up gphoto2 the same way you did, works for me...

instead of using gtkam i just use a terminal with the following command:

gphoto2 --get-all-files

i have made a text file with the same thing in it and made it exectuable so basically any user can click on a text file named camera and it will extract all my photos from my digital camera to my /home/*user directory

i am sure those empty files are probably written to when hotplug or any usb device is currently active (but i have not looked while using any USB perifrials)

Thanx for your answer Okie!

However this does not solve my problem. when I type

gphoto2 -P or gphoto2 --get-all-files

at the command-line as a mortal user I get an error message because gphoto can not connect to my camera. The only way to solve this is to either use gphoto2 only as root. This may not be such a save way of doing so. Or, as the second option, I have to manually adjust permissions every time I plug in my camera. Works fine, however this is not a convenient nor a elegant way.

Thanks to Patrick

It seems that my troubles are over now. Patrick Volkerding released an 'updated' version of hotplug. This caused the script provided by GPhoto2 to work again and set the permissions correctly.
