USB key fails booting
Hello,
I followed the following two articles to create a bootable USB key that will run the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but both methods fail, using two different USB keys:
Thank you for any hint. |
Easiest solution might be to boot from an ubuntu 9.10 CD or USB key (this'll be a "live" installation [AKA "Try ubuntu without installing to your HDD"], running from the install media, and so rather slow).
Ubuntu has a GUI program you can point at any linux distro.iso file (not just one of the 'buntus), and it'll put it on a FAT32 formatted USB key, and make it bootable. Find it under System - Administration - USB Startup disk creator. It'll even let you create space on the USB key to store data between reboots from the key. Just be very sure you are installing to the correct device. |
Not all usb keys can boot. Might try your installs on a few different systems just in case they really are working.
Some systems boot to a usb (something) while others actually boot to a hard drive. Sometimes you have to put usb flash in a system cold with power off. Then boot to bios and the flash will show up as a hard drive. You then have to move it up in order above the installed hard drive. As to how to get a usb bootable you might end up trying a few means. One is HP's usb tool. It almost always works. Then re-do your install. Might see this too. http://www.intowindows.com/bootable-usb/ Also see www.pendrivelinux.com for other ideas. Personally I prefer liveusbcreator. |
do you have boot from usb set up in the BIOS
some systems have to be told to boot from usb in the bios if the computer is more than 5years old it may not be able to boot from usb at all |
Thanks everyone. FWIW, the Clonezilla ISO image can boot just fine from the USB keys I tried with the Kaspersky ISO image. I'll try a bit more, and give up and just use CD's if it still doesn't work.
Thank you. |
