Angry USB and Linux

Can someone please help me!!!!!!!!!
I have an old PC that I want to get setup with Smoothwall Linux as a ADSL firewall.
I have installed Smoothwall and a PCI USB adapter for the DSL modem, the network comes up fine and I can log onto the firewall and administer it....
The problem is, I loaded the Acatel mgmt.o file to the firewall and plugged in the modem, no power from the modem and a Input/Output error (5) in the logs when the PPP tries to dial!
I removed the USB board to check it but the firewall still detects 2 USB ports!
The motherboard is a Zida/Tomato 5DTX II (old Pentium 233Mhz MMX chip) and it seems that Zida have gone!
Can someone help please, I am assuming that the m/board has USB but no connectors, I have no manual, no website for the manual and no way to disable on-board USB in the BIOS, is there anything I can do!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks

Si :-(

hardware....

first make sure yur modem is detected thru the pci/usb card... are the lights on? should be 2 green lights...

if they are on and yu have uhci module included in /etc/modules.conf then we have a different problem... please let me know if the hardware is detected and i can most likely walk yu thru this...i have a very similar setup...

with the old tomato mb's the usb ports advertised really dont show up well in linux like maybe win95 (usb add/on edition)...

let me know and stay posted....

:-) !!!!!

Sorry should have mentioned this in the first place...
I have a Belkin PCI USB adapter card, the Linux startup detects the 2 USB ports but when I plug in the Alcatel modem, no lights appear, the modem does not seem to recieve power

Thanks loads, causing a lot of frustration
