Postgresql has great install documentation. Is there any area in particular you are having trouble with?

I followed this guide (very carefully) and was able to install without much trouble. The guide teaches you a lot also as you go along about how pg works. You will need to know this info later on to configure connections so it helps to learn during the install. Be patient, it takes a couple of days to sort it out.

postgresql is installed and setup by most distros now, especially well in Debian Woody.
Frontends to it as well as backend adaptors (liks python-psycopg)are available.
It is the most powerful full featured open-source database around. Well worth taking few weeks to learn it.

The easiest method would be from the install CD. Use the RPM GUI. Everything is already setup.
