URGENT how to kill a proccess?

I'm trying to kill a frozen java proccess that's running my resin HTTP server (and keeps me from restarting it because it's holding onto the ports)...

Normally, kill -9 uid would kill it, but it doesn't work!

When I try kill -9 $UID or just kill $UID nothing happens!

Please help, how can I fix it? Restarting the server is not an option....

Thanks!

as others will tell you, posting 'urgent' in the thread title wont help and is frowned upon.. anyways:

whats $UID? can you su to root and try and kill the process? whats the error message or whatever message your getting after running the command?

Sorry, it's just that this was truly urgent situation..

$UID, I meat $PID - the pid of the proccessor

And I was root, I always work as root .

And there was no error message - nothing whatsoever...

I ended up rebooting the machine, but I'd still like to know if there's a way I could've done it wihtout rebooting?

NEVER work as root.
its account is there solely for system administration only when needed.
and no, it wasnt truly urgent! everyones questions on here have the same priority and posting urgent wont increase your odds of getting help. just FYI.

can you copy and paste from the terminal window what you typed and its output?

Ummh.. the only kind of work I do with Linux is administrative... and like you said, I use root for that

And as for what I typed in:

ps -elf | grep java (find java's PID, say 12939)

.... Output of my javas ....

kill -9 12939

... no output here ...

That's it. Normally, that would kill the java, but today is the first time it didn't...
