Urgent: GRUP Error 17

Friends:

I am using Ubuntu 5.10, together with with winXp in the same hardisk.

All the time there is no problem until several days before, I freed some space from linux system and try to use the winXp to format the free space. The formating stoped with error, and after I reboot, the Grup Error 17 occurs.

Now I can't go anywhere in the harddisk excepting looking at the error code....so

Any senior knows the solution, please help me out of the situation, thanks a lot.

Grub error 17 is bad news, for either Stage 1.5 or 2;

So, it looks like it's may be time to set sytem the BIOS to boot from CD and;

1. Get into the WindowsXP recovery console and run fixmbr and maybe fixboot

2. Re-install Linux

Thanks a lot for your advice, it works. although linux has totally gone, but at least I have not lost any data, and I can always install the linux back
