Upgrading to newer version (Fedora)

Hi,

I am using Redhat 9 and I was interested in trying out of Fedora. Is there a way to upgrade to Fedora without losing all my settings?
If there is, is it easy as inserting the Fedora 1 cd while in X windows or...

Thanks

Depends..
I did just that, wrote down my partition table and then
left /home and installed fedora over the top.
Working OK, a few problems but nothing annoying yet.

macidragon, can you expand on what problems you experienced? I will need to do this shortly and would like to pick up your insight.

Thx.

ATI radeon 9800 doesn't work with fedora,
well it's the drivers for the install that don't :(
and the first boot insists on using X so it crashes all the time
But I had a 9000 lying around that worked fine.
Then installed the ATI drivers and put my 9800 back in
Also umounting filesystems the reiserfs ones I have tend to hang when they try and unmount on reboot :(

Thanks. Neither of those problems should affect me so I'll probably go ahead as soon as I have enough time.

Anyone else with issues while upgrading to Fedora?

Upgraded from rh9.0 to fedora core 1

Damn you red hat and your cursed e-mails. Thjey sent me that "redhat linux 7.x - 9 will be discontinued" and it scared me. So i dled Fedora and upgraded. Now X keeps shuting down before the graphical login can load.

It tells me that "something is going bad" and it stopps loading X for 2 minutes and then starts again. No if i load gdm maually i can get into kde fine...but the froblem is that normally my linux box boots in japanese, but when i have to lod kdm maually, it does not load the correct fonts and there fore i get these little bastard as text "?? or the little squares"

I really need hellp really bad. I thoughk it was my video card (ati rage fury 128 pro all in wonder <---- that's a mouth full) but it seems to have the drivers correctly. Also i should now be able to open kdm because it uses X to run! I am starting to not like fedora already and this litle stunt that REDHAT pulled is pissing me off.

Also i bout 7.3 a long time ago and by far it is my favorite version of redhat. so i installed it on another drive to back up my files (music/videos, tv shows) but i upgraded because of the apps that are installed took me a long time to get them to work(over 4 months to get 9 perfect...and better than XP). I can't let that go to waste.

Ok...i'll stop moaning an complaining but here is my question for you guys...(this may sound redundant but)... Why is X crashing will trying to load X for the graphical login screen!? I'm using fedora and it was an upgrade install from redhat 9. If i load kdm...X starts and load the login and kde will work fine except that it does not load the correct fonts for he japanese enviroment and therefore all of my text looks like ?? or small squares. Can anyone help me or do i have to start from scratch!?

I had a similar problem when I upgraded. The problem was that the upgrade replaced my /etc/X11/XF86Config with a new one. Don't worry, the old one was backed up... I think it was /etc/X11/XF86Config~

Try the diff command to see the difference between the two files and then depending on how extensive the differences are (mine was 2 lines different) you can either re-modify your new Fedora XF86Config or replace it with your old one.

(You can always boot up with a CD if you can't change to RunLevel 3)

Regards,
J.

You are so cool!

Thanks for this bit of info...mine also was only two lines and i am glad that you mentioned the fiff comand. i didn't even know it existed.

Now i can finish my program...I am a java programmer and it is due monday for my class. Thanks again and now i think i owe you my first born child!

i thought that was the prob...but

well i didn't realize that the changes were the ones that i had made earlier. See i have the dri driver for my video card installed and so it didn't load the correct module so i edited it in.

I reverted back to the backedup Xfree86 but it is the one that fedora made... i'm sorry...i have been dealing with linux for 2 years and yet i am still a noob. Well if anyone can help me then thanks...otherwise i am sorry to waste your time
Ant.

When all else fails, re-install your video drivers.
