Upgrading from RH9 Workstation to Server

I have recently installed a RH9 Workstation installation onto and old HP Vectra, now every time i leave it alone for a couple of hours it goes to sleep, not good.

I am unable to find out how to turn this off and on reflection should have installed the Server version.

Can anybody tell me how to upgrade. I would rather not reinstall.

Cheers,
Eain

hey eaino welcome to linuxquestions.org

as you can see, I'm a newbie as well....

So here's some newbie advice:

1> It's going to sleep? probably has something to do with a powersaving service, haves you gone through all your services and disabled the ones you don't need?

(I'm in windows at the moment otherwise I'd tell you how it's done, search these forums for "Disabling Services", it's pretty easy)

2> I'm not quite sure that there is much difference between server and workstation, as far as I know it's only how your settings and which packages are installed. It's not like Windows 2k and Windows 2k Server where one has DC and AD... when I installed RH9 Server... it was just RH9 with server packages installed.

Does that help?

again I'm just a noob

Yea, the only real difference between a workstation and a server in linux is most servers dont have X installed (or maybe X with a light window manager like fluxbox or Enlightenment, no gnome or kde). A server isnt used much (you wont play games, browse the web or chat on a server) and a server....serves. Like, you'll install apache, dhcpd, bind or whatever you intend to serve.

for instance:

i have 2 gentoo boxes. same base system but my workstation has gnome, gaim, mozilla, curphoo, nvidia 3d drivers, games, all the fun goodies.

gentoo server: bind, apache, ntpd, i have X but dont use it and i usually just ssh in to change stuff.
