Upgrading Firefox [solved]

Disclaimer: I am a total newbie to linux. :)

I installed Firefox using urpmi (that Easy URPMI site is great btw), however is the preview version. There do not appear to be any rpms available for Firefox 1.0 for Mandrake 10.1 which is the distribution I am using, so I downloaded the installer. However when I run the installer I want to be sure that I am upgrading my old version rather than just creating another version. How do I do this? I don't even know how to find the directory in which Firefox is currently installed. Is there something equivalent to the Windows feature where an installer can search the registry for previously installed versions?

Also in a somewhat-but-not-really related note, I like how installing rpm packages takes care of things like adding the icons to your start menu and adding the appropriate directories to my path. I don't suppose there is any way that there is an easy way to do this when I have to compile and install the packages manually?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm eager to learn, thanks!

Mark

edit: got a solution from a different board, thanks anyway. :)
