upgrading a program

when I want to upgrade a program i.e gaim do I have to first remove my current files and than compile the new version or should I just compile and it will upgrade itself?

or is there a spesific path that I should follow ? any special commands etc.. ?

It depends how you do it. If you use pkgtool, it will replace the old version for you (unless you tell it not to, see "man pkgtool"). Otherwise, if you do it manually you can generally leave an older version of a package in place until you're sure the new is one working, but always look at the README file to check for exceptions.
