Upgraded Kernel - No Keyboard or Mouse in X on Mandriva 2006

I have just built the 2.6.14.3 kernel on my Dekstop system (Spec in sig), everything went in ok, and then I booted into the new kernel and loaded X.
The log in screen appeared ok, however when I tried to log in the keyboard and mouse are both unresponsive.

If I boot into the console, everything works fine.
I can log in. The xorg.conf file is the same as it was under 2.6.12.

I tried reinstalling the nvidia drivers, and this time I got the nvidia logo as X starts up, but still no keyboard and mouse so I can't log in.

When I compiled 2.6.14.3, I made sure everything was selected under the keyboard and mouse settings.
I've noticed that my mouse (Intellimouse Optical USB, but using the included USB -> PS2 converter) is powered off when X starts. No red glow from the Laser LED.

Does anyone know how I can get X to detect my keyboard and mouse?
The keyboard is a standard cheap and cheerful PS2 keyboard.
