Hi all,
I'm a new network administrator and the linux version of one server (our mail server, proxy and DNS) is a linux RH 5.1 and kernel : rpm -qa | grep 'kernel'

I want to fix security holes.
What have I to do to update (or upgrade -I don't know differencies between both-) ? Just recompile with the last kernel or re-install a new Red Hat?
I want that my mail server, proxy and DNS ran after that with the same config (so I don't want -if possible- my config files be overwritten).
Thx for u help.

My advice? Buy yourself a new machine and reload everything from scratch. RH5 is pretty old. So is that kernel. There are lots of security holes that have been found and patched since RH5 was out.

Depends on what your needs are, but I'd imagine that with your setup, you wouldn't need that much horsepower. I think you could get off pretty cheap buying a new machine. The work is going to be installing everything, but since it's a new box and your existing box is still running, you can take your time about getting it loaded to be sure everything works good.

Yes I think you're right. If I keep my old PC I won't lose any data and will have time to test the new one.
The pbl is that I have to ask my boss a new PC! I just asked him a new one to install a storage server with samba and a DAT to save important data.
Thx for u reply Donboy
