Upgrade to KDE 3.3 with SuSE 9.1
I am running SuSE 9.1 with KDE 3.2. I have downloaded all the rpms to upgrade to KDE 3.3 plus a few other rpms to resolve some dependencies. When I try to install all the rpms at once using "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" I get these errors:
file /opt/kde3/share/config/khotnewstuffrc from install of kdelibs3-3.3.1-10 conflicts with file from package kdepim3-3.2.1-35
file /opt/kde3/bin/ghns from install of kdelibs3-3.3.1-10 conflicts with file from package kdepim3-organizer-3.2.1-35
file /opt/kde3/bin/khotnewstuff from install of kdelibs3-3.3.1-10 conflicts with file from package kdepim3-organizer-3.2.1-35
file /opt/kde3/lib/libknewstuff.la from install of kdelibs3-3.3.1-10 conflicts with file from package kdepim3-organizer-3.2.1-35
....and on and on for 200 lines.
How can I get KDE 3.3 installed? Can I use "rpm -Uvh --force" or will this screw up KDE?

I'd force it.
I did the same thing a few weeks ago and got fed up of package a depending on package b and package c conflicting with earlier version of package c etc etc etc.
So I forced the upgrade and everything was fine. I even did some of it through Synaptic if I remember correctly

I did the update with Yast. All you need to do is to add a SuSE FTP source for KDE to your Yast installation sources and update all packages that appear blue in the software installation module.

Depending on the mirror you use it's something like:
i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.x/yast-source
(where x is the version you are actually running)

I had the same problem with the PIM related packages and forced the packages to install.
The better way is to use one of the mirror sites. Am in the UK so it was:-
mirrorservice.org
sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source
But have a look at:-
http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...t_mirrors.html
Then open yast and add the ftp details to 'installation sources'

Being such a newbie to SuSE (and linux overall) I didn't think of using YaST to update KDE. However I have a new problem. Whenever I try to change my installation source in YaST a dialog box pops up with:
Unable to create installation source from URL 'ftp://xxxxxxxxx/whatever'
Details: ERROR(InstSrcE:_no_instsc_on_media) Try again?
No matter what mirror I use or what directory I get that same error message.
I have the addresses right because I can go to any of the addresses in Firefox or from an ftp program and download the latest KDE rpms no problem. But when I try to use YaST with those same sites and directory I get that error. The mirrors also work fine for me using YOU to update installed packages but those same sites give me the above error if I try to use them as an installation source in YaST.

It was really easy using apt4rpm. I just $apt-get dist-upgrade and restart the xserver when it's am finished.

A very common mistake is to start the path to the directory with a slash. It should look e.g. like this:
Server: ftp.gwdg.de
Directory: pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source
EDIT: I have heard so many enthusiastic reports about the capabilities of apt, that I almost want to try it. But on the other hand, I never felt any need for it. Yast can do all I want it to do.
