Back it all up.
I attempted to upgrade my dual-boot redhat 7.1 install to 7.2 but because the updated 7.1 kernel version 2.4.9 was later than the kernel shipping with 7.2 of version 2.4.7, it didn't install a new kernel, so didn't edit my boot loader, and so made my Linux install unbootable.
It had also complained that one or more third-party RPMs were in conflict with RPMS it was going to install. The installer would not tell me what those RPMs were, which I feel is a major problem with this installer. Tell me what I need to remove to make the install go smoothly, please!
Of course I had done a backup and printed out important files like /etc/modules.conf before trying to upgrade, having been stung by upgrades more than once since Redhat 5.0. This let me tell the installer to nuke my partition and install again anyway.
I highly recommend not upgrading your system and taking the time to back up all your data before first attempting an upgrade and then relenting and doing a full install. It will take longer to bring your machine back to the way it was, but you should have a very good backup anyway.
